Parkinson's Academy faculty wins international award!
NewsHuge congratulations to Professor Richard Walker, consultant geriatrician and valued Faculty member of Parkinson's Academy, who has been awarded the prestigious 'World Parkinson’s Program Dr Rana International Parkinson’s Community Service Award'.
The award, created by the World Parkinson’s Program, selects up to three outstanding individuals each year, honoring their dedication, passion, and leadership in improving the quality of life of individuals with Parkinson’s across the globe.
Richard, who has previously been Chair of the Movement Disorders Society African Task Force, was given the international award in August following 25 years of dedication to improving the lives of people with Parkinson's both at home in North east England, and abroad in sub-Saharan Africa.
Richard, who established a dedicated Parkinson's service at the North Tyneside hospital he works in, has pioneered research into diagnosis and treatment of the condition in Africa. He has worked to transform healthcare in Tanzania by helping to develop and lead Northumbria Healthcare’s international partnership with medics at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre, northern Tanzania.
